On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 3 p.m., a pivotal seminar commenced for the 5th-year students of the Institute of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (ISH) at the University of Douala in Yabassi. Led by Prof. Pascal Charlemagne Messanga Nyamnding, a political scientist and international relations expert, these future engineers were introduced to the « Fundamentals of Globalization, » a complex yet essential topic for their future careers.

Over the course of 48 hours, the students delved into the profound transformation of today’s world. Prof. Messanga Nyamnding made it clear that globalization is not merely an economic or political reality—it is a multifaceted process that impacts all aspects of human life, including the environment and natural resources. For students specializing in fisheries and aquatic sciences, understanding globalization’s influence on the sustainable management of marine resources is crucial, particularly as these resources become increasingly scarce.

The seminar was structured into six carefully designed chapters, offering students in-depth knowledge on the globalized economy, transnational networks, environmental challenges, and the importance of integrating strategies in a connected world. Prof. Messanga Nyamnding emphasized that in this new global order, geographical distances no longer pose barriers. Aspiring marine engineers must be equipped to compete with professionals from all corners of the globe.

At the end of the two days of intensive exchanges, Prof. Messanga Nyamnding expressed his satisfaction with the level of engagement and quality of discussion among the students. He even noted that these students are now on par with his Paris-based students, who had received the same training just a few weeks earlier. This seminar reinforced the idea that globalization is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for young African professionals to rise to the occasion.

The students emerged from the seminar armed with new knowledge and intellectual tools, ready to tackle international competition. They are confident that their education at ISH will enable them to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with graduates from prestigious institutions around the world.

Through initiatives like this seminar, ISH continues to position itself as a key player in preparing its students for contemporary global challenges, while enhancing their competitiveness on the international stage.
