From December 9 to 10, the Alvi Hotel in Douala will host a key seminar on the sustainability of fishing in Cameroon. Organized by the Cameroon Fisheries Society (SCH/CFS) in collaboration with several partner organizations, this event will focus on addressing the pressing issue of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, which directly conflicts with artisanal and industrial fishing.
Under the theme “Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing and Industrial Overfishing in Conflict with Artisanal Fishing as Obstacles to the Development of the Fisheries Sector in Cameroon”, the workshop will focus on evaluating methods to eradicate illegal fishing practices while promoting conservation measures for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and other innovative measures (OECMs/AMCEZ). With the support of the Institute of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of the University of Douala, the Cameroon Wildlife Conservation Society (CWCS), the African Marine Mammal Conservation Organisation (AMMCO), the Conserving Mangroves Life Security (RCM), the Cameroon Marine and Coastal Network (CAMNET), Blue Ventures, beyond conservation, and Ocean Five.
Key activities of the seminar include:
- Analysis of the dynamics of illegal fishing in Cameroon.
- Strategies to combat IUU fishing.
- Development of sustainable fishing practices.
- Promotion of MPAs and other conservation measures.
The event is aimed at researchers, educators, students, local authorities, and stakeholders in the fisheries sector. It seeks to enhance governance and sustainability in this vital sector for Cameroon’s economy and ecosystem.
